In short
Most strong forward deployed engineers are not called forward deployed engineers yet. The title only consolidated around 2023 and 2024, so the people who can do the job are carrying other titles: implementation and integration engineers who ship production code, technical consultants who deployed a platform inside customers, and early engineers at small companies who became the customer-facing engineer because someone had to.
If you search for forward deployed engineers by title, you find a small number of people who adopted the term early and a larger number who have read about it. Neither is the population you want. The people who can do the job have mostly been doing it for years under a different name, and that is where a search has to look.
We cover what the role is and how to run the search elsewhere. This is the part those pieces leave out: which titles the right people are carrying today.
The test that sorts every candidate
One question separates a real forward deployed engineer from everyone who sounds like one: have they shipped production code inside somebody else's environment, under somebody else's constraints?
Not a demo. Not a proof of concept that stopped at the pilot. Code that ran against a customer's real data, behind their permissions, integrated with systems they did not choose, and stayed running after the engineer left the room. Every source population below qualifies or fails on that test, and so does every individual inside it.
Where they are hiding
Implementation and integration engineers
The closest match and the largest pool. At a B2B software company, the engineer who takes a signed deal and makes the product work inside the customer's stack is already doing forward deployed work. The strongest have written real integrations rather than configured a product, and have been the person the customer calls when it breaks.
Technical consultants at platform and data companies
Engineers who deployed a data, analytics or infrastructure platform inside enterprise customers. They are used to hostile real-world data, awkward security reviews and a customer who needs something working by a date. This is also where the role's lineage runs, back to the model Palantir built of sending engineers to live alongside the deployment.
Early engineers at small B2B companies
At a company of fifteen people, somebody writes the code and also sits with the first customers to make it work. That person often became a forward deployed engineer by necessity, and rarely has the title on their profile. Founding engineers and early hires are an underused source.
Backend engineers who sat with customers
Some backend engineers spent a stretch embedded with a key account, in professional services engineering, or on a customer-facing platform team. The combination of real backend depth and time in front of customers is exactly the profile, even when the title says nothing about it.
Escalation and customer-facing reliability engineers
The engineers who get the hardest customer problems once support cannot solve them. The best of them write substantial code to diagnose and fix issues in customer environments. Check the coding depth carefully here; the range is wide.
Where the search goes wrong
Two populations look right and usually are not.
- Pre-sales solutions engineers who build demos. Many are excellent, and some convert well, but a demo is built to persuade rather than to run in production. The difference between the two roles is exactly the engineering bar, so apply the test above strictly.
- Consultants who advise rather than build. Customer-facing, commercially sharp, and frequently no longer writing production code. The customer skills are real; the role needs both.
Search for the title and you find the people who were early to the word. Search for code shipped in a customer's environment and you find the people who can do the job.
What they cost
Forward deployed engineering is one of the highest-priced engineering bands in Australia, because the pool with proven customer-embedded delivery is small. Base salary, 25th to 75th percentile of accepted offers:
| City | Senior | Tech lead |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | AUD 180-240k | AUD 230-270k |
| Melbourne | AUD 175-230k | not published |
| Brisbane | AUD 160-215k | not published |
| New York / San Francisco | USD 240-330k | USD 310-430k |
| London | GBP 120-165k | GBP 150-200k |
Each band is local currency and nothing here converts between them. We do not publish a tech lead band for Melbourne or Brisbane because we have not placed enough at that level there to state one. People converting in from implementation or consulting roles often sit in the lower half of these bands on their current title, which is worth knowing when you pitch the offer: the step up is part of the appeal, and underpricing it is how you lose them to the company that did not.
When you write the advert, name the customers and environments the engineer would work in, not just the stack. The job description builder will draft one, and the JD grader flags the phrases that cost you replies.
FAQ
Where do forward deployed engineers come from?
Mostly from roles with other titles, because the forward deployed engineer title only consolidated around 2023 and 2024. The main sources are implementation and integration engineers who ship production code, technical consultants who deployed platforms inside customers, early engineers at small B2B companies, backend engineers who spent time embedded with customers, and escalation engineers with strong coding depth.
Can a solutions engineer become a forward deployed engineer?
Sometimes. The deciding question is whether they have shipped production code inside a customer's environment rather than building demos to support a sale. Many pre-sales solutions engineers have strong customer skills but a lower engineering bar than the forward deployed role needs, so assess the coding depth directly.
How do you screen a forward deployed engineer?
Ask about code they shipped inside someone else's environment, under someone else's constraints: the customer's data, permissions and systems, and what happened after they left. Strong candidates give specific accounts of integrations that broke and how they fixed them. Demos and pilots that never reached production do not count as evidence.
How much does a forward deployed engineer cost in Australia?
Senior forward deployed engineers earn AUD 180-240k base in Sydney, AUD 175-230k in Melbourne and AUD 160-215k in Brisbane, at the 25th to 75th percentile of accepted offers. Sydney tech leads earn AUD 230-270k. It is one of the highest-priced engineering bands in Australia because the pool with proven customer-embedded delivery is small.
