Sponsoring an Engineer in Australia

Matt Gold · Founder, Re:Sourced|8 min read|

In short

Most senior engineers are sponsored in Australia on the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482). For nearly every senior engineering role the salary clears the Specialist Skills income threshold, the faster stream, by a wide margin. The exceptions are Brisbane software and data roles near the bottom of their band. The real costs are time and process, not the threshold.

Not migration advice

This article explains how sponsorship affects a hiring decision. It is not migration advice. Visa rules, fees and thresholds change, and each case turns on its own facts, so confirm the current position with the Department of Home Affairs or a registered migration agent before you rely on anything here.

Visa sponsorship comes up in almost every search where the strongest candidate is not already in Australia, or is here on a visa tied to their current employer. In our conversations it is one of the practical constraints that decides whether a candidate can start at all, more often than their interest in the role does. It is worth understanding before the offer rather than after the candidate accepts it.

The visa most engineering hires use

The Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa of the same subclass number. It has three streams:

You also need to be an approved sponsor, which is a separate step from nominating the individual role.

Where our bands sit against the thresholds

Both income thresholds are indexed on 1 July each year. From 1 July 2026 the Specialist Skills Income Threshold is a little under AUD 147,000, and the Core Skills Income Threshold sits under AUD 80,000. Check the exact current figures on the Home Affairs salary requirements page before you nominate anyone.

Set those against the senior bands we publish and one thing stands out. Every senior engineering band in Australia clears the Core Skills threshold by a wide margin, so it is almost never the constraint. And almost every senior band clears the Specialist Skills threshold too, which puts senior engineering hires in the faster stream.

There are two exceptions. Senior software engineers and senior data engineers in Brisbane have a band of AUD 145-170k, and the floor of that band sits just below the Specialist Skills threshold. A Brisbane offer near the bottom of the band may therefore not qualify for the Specialist stream, while the same offer nearer the midpoint would. Everywhere else, from Melbourne software at AUD 155-180k upwards, the band floor already clears it.

That matters for how you pitch the offer. If you are sponsoring, an offer at the bottom of a Brisbane band can cost you the faster stream for the sake of a small difference in salary.

For senior engineers the income threshold is rarely the problem. The calendar is.

The salary also has to match the market

Clearing the threshold is necessary but not sufficient. You are also required to pay the sponsored worker at least what an Australian in the same role would earn, the annual market salary rate. For senior engineering roles the band for the role is a reasonable guide to what that looks like, and the salary checker has every band by city and level.

This is also where sponsorship helps the candidate. A sponsored engineer cannot legally be paid below market for the role, which removes the worry some candidates have about being underpaid because their visa depends on the job.

What it costs, and where to find the figures

Sponsorship carries several separate charges, and we are deliberately not quoting amounts here because they change and the exact figure depends on your business. The components are:

Home Affairs publishes the current amounts on its cost of sponsoring page. Add them to the ordinary cost of the hire, which the cost to hire calculator works out with superannuation and payroll tax by state.

The cost that decides it is time

For most employers the fees are not what makes sponsorship hard. The time is. Becoming an approved sponsor, lodging the nomination, the visa decision and then the candidate's relocation and notice period all sit between an accepted offer and a first day.

We are not quoting processing times either, because they move and Home Affairs publishes current ones. What we can say is that sponsorship adds to a start date rather than to the search, and it compounds with everything else that delays a start: notice periods, a pending bonus the candidate will not walk away from, a relocation that has to be arranged around a family.

Those weeks have a cost of their own. The cost of vacancy calculator puts a number on each week the role stays empty, which is the fair comparison when you are deciding between sponsoring the strongest candidate and hiring the best available locally.

When sponsorship is worth it

It is harder to justify for a role that a strong local candidate could fill in a similar time, where you would be adding months to the start date for no gain in quality.

Security-cleared roles are a separate matter. Most clearances require Australian citizenship, which sponsorship does not provide; our guide to hiring cleared engineers covers that.

FAQ

What visa do Australian companies use to sponsor software engineers?

Most use the Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa of the same number. It has Specialist Skills, Core Skills and Labour Agreement streams. Senior engineering roles usually qualify for the Specialist Skills stream because their salaries clear its income threshold. This is general information rather than migration advice.

Does a senior engineer's salary meet the 482 visa income threshold?

Almost always. From 1 July 2026 the Specialist Skills Income Threshold is a little under AUD 147,000 and the Core Skills threshold is under AUD 80,000. Nearly every senior engineering band in Australia clears both. The exceptions are senior software and data engineers in Brisbane, whose AUD 145-170k band starts just below the Specialist threshold. Check the exact current figures with Home Affairs.

How much does it cost to sponsor an engineer in Australia?

Sponsorship involves a sponsorship application fee, a nomination fee for each role, the Skilling Australians Fund levy, which depends on business size and length of stay, and the visa application charge. The amounts change, so check the current figures on the Home Affairs cost of sponsoring page. For most employers the larger cost is the time sponsorship adds to a start date.

Is it faster to hire locally or to sponsor?

It depends on the role. For skills that are scarce in Australia, such as specialist AI or forward deployed engineering, sponsoring the right candidate can be faster than waiting for a local one who may not exist. For roles a strong local candidate could fill in similar time, sponsorship usually just adds months to the start date. A candidate already in Australia on another employer's sponsorship is typically the quickest case.
