"Principal engineer" is the most inconsistently priced title in Australian tech, because it sits at different heights on different ladders. At many employers, principal is the rung directly above senior. At companies running a US-style ladder, a staff rung sits in between, and principal means something bigger. Where a company runs senior, then staff, then principal, the titles shift up a band.
