Backend engineers are the deepest pool in Australian tech, and the pricing question has a two-part answer. Most backend engineers price inside the software engineering band, by level, exactly like their frontend colleagues. But a meaningful slice of "backend" work is really platform engineering wearing a product title, and that work prices in a higher band. Knowing which side of that line a role sits on is worth ten thousand dollars or more in either direction.

The platform-band exception

Here is the part most salary content misses.
