Cyber engineers, for defence.

Defence cyber hiring is clearance-gated and supply-constrained, and AUKUS made it more acute. Re:Sourced sources cleared and clearable engineers for defence primes, the sovereign industrial base and government programs, calibrating every brief against who can legally do the work.

The profile

What a defence cyber engineer looks like.

Defence cyber engineering is its own discipline. The work runs across secure-by-design for command, control and weapons systems, hardening classified and air-gapped environments, sovereign capability development, and assurance against the Essential Eight, IRAP and the Defence security frameworks. The common thread is that the engineer operates where a security failure is a national security failure rather than a data-breach headline, and the bar for rigour is set accordingly.

The defining constraint is clearance. Almost every defence cyber role requires an Australian Government security clearance, which means Australian citizenship and a sponsoring organisation. That turns an already thin cyber market into a fraction of itself. The strongest candidates are either already cleared and fully engaged on existing programs, or uncleared citizens who can be sponsored but cannot touch classified systems for months. We cover the mechanics in depth in our guide on hiring cleared cyber security engineers in Australia.

Technically, the profiles we place most into defence are secure-systems and platform-hardening engineers, detection and response specialists for classified networks, and security architects who can write assurance documentation that survives an IRAP assessment. Raw offensive-security talent matters, but the differentiator in defence is the ability to ship secure, auditable systems inside a heavily governed environment.

Where they come from

Where defence cyber talent comes from.

The cleared defence cyber pool concentrates around the programs that built it: the defence primes, the Defence Science and Technology Group, government cyber agencies and the cleared contractor base. Geographically it clusters in Canberra, Adelaide and increasingly Brisbane, where the AUKUS and sovereign capability footprint is growing fastest. Sydney and Melbourne hold cleared talent too, but in smaller concentrations relative to commercial cyber.

AUKUS Pillar 2 widened the demand sharply, standing up new sovereign cyber workstreams across the defence industrial base while drawing on the same finite cleared pool. The result is a market where the clearance itself often out-prices a seniority level, and where briefs routinely source interstate with relocation or hybrid arrangements.

Our approach is to map the cleared and clearable market against the real need: whether the role demands an active clearance from day one, or whether a clearable Australian citizen can be sponsored and staged onto unclassified work first. Getting that decision right at intake is the single biggest determinant of whether a defence cyber search lands in weeks or stalls for months.
