The remote market in Australia
Remote-first works well in Australia for senior individual contributor roles, distributed-by-design platform teams, and AI-native scale-ups where the engineering culture is async-tolerant. It works less well at staff and principal levels where stakeholder access and architectural influence are part of the role.
Most remote-first AU teams settle into a quarterly in-person cadence (one to two days, often Sydney or Melbourne). Travel budget and cadence should be in the offer at signing, not negotiated later.
Salary bands 2026
Remote-first base salary in Australia tracks Sydney bands within roughly 3% for senior IC roles, and within 5-8% for staff and above. Most remote-first employers do not regional-discount; the few who do lose senior candidates at offer stage.
